Interesting item courtesy of SLO Downtown Association's e-newsletter:

Last month, the Tour of California introduced millions of television viewers to SLO County as a premier bicycle tourism destination. The number of visiting cyclists is expected to increase as a result. In anticipation of their arrival, the San Luis Obispo County Bicycle Coalition is proud to announce an opportunity for local businesses to show these valuable potential customers that you support cycling: the Bike Friendly Business membership program.

Of the 85 million cyclists in the U.S., 25 percent live in the West. Their median household income is $80,000, and 87 percent are between the ages of 18 and 44. Identifying yourself as a Bike Friendly Business will not only draw bike tourists to your door, it will also help increase word-of-mouth recommendations from locals. A recent survey by the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce found that more SLO county residents follow the Tour de France than the Super Bowl. There’s no doubt about it, this is a bike-centric community.

When you join the Coalition at the Bike Friendly Business level ($150 per year), you will receive a high-quality Bike Friendly Business sticker to display (see attached), access to bicycle maps that will give visiting cyclists recommendations for local rides, tips from the Coalition on how to increase your business’ bike appeal, and our quarterly newsletter, “The Spoken Wheel,” which will keep you informed about our local activities as well as national cycling and pedestrian-related news. We will also identify you on our website as a business that supports cycling. Membership forms are available at: http://slobikelane.org/News/MembershipForm.pdf
